Turning the Opera House Blue

Matt had the honour, together with fellow JDRF Youth Ambassador Nikita and with Rob Palmer from Better Homes and Gardens (who also has Type 1) of flicking the (figurative) switch to turn the Sydney Opera House blue for World Diabetes Day on Nov 14, 2009.

Walk to Cure (Type 1) Diabetes – 2009

Matt and the rest of us are getting ready for another JDRF Walk to Cure – this year there will be two walks in Sydney, although the Antulov family will actually be walking in Christchurch NZ with some friends, as we’ll be there for a few weeks during the school holidays.

To help Matt, please donate here – we are hoping for a big result this year to take The Matt Pack to a total of over $100,000 raised in the past 6 years to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

Matt and I were privileged to be invited to participate in Kids in the (NSW Parliament) House in November 2008.

We’ve been living with type 1 diabetes in the family now for over 6 years.

Our day-to-day management of Matt’s condition is mostly under control, although most days he’ll either have a hypo (dangerously low blood glucose levels), or his BGLs will be well above the recommneded levels.

It is the variation in his BGLs that continues to concern us, and continues to require continual attention.

But, at times, we still slip into ’normal’ mode and forget how seriously dangerous this disease is, not just for the likley prospect of long-term complications that might come, but, as this story shows, the possible immediate outcome if the disease isn’t treated with the utmost respect.

Matt was privileged to be a part of Kids in the House in Canberra in November 2006. While he was there, he met John Howard (the then Prime Minister of Australia) and Peter Costella (the then Treasurer) and his own MP, Malcolm Turnbull, who he had also met in his electorate office in Waverley a month or so earlier.
